Asthma and COPD Overlap Case Study Discussion

Today individuals with respiratory conditions can have features of both asthma and COPD to various degrees.1 Each individual patient may have their own distinct combination of asthma and COPD, as showcased in this webinar.

The heterogeneity of Asthma and COPD Overlap (ACO) makes it impossible to recommend a simplistic, ‘one size fits all’ approach to the management of these patients.2 Critical interpretation of the patients full history, including blood eosinophil levels and exacerbation severity/frequency,3 past treatments, diagnosis and lifestyle choices is required.

Dr Hassan Burhan presents on some patient case studies to outline the different physiological features of respiratory conditions and assesses, in discussion with Professor Dave Singh, whether or not Asthma and COPD Overlap (ACO) is present.

Please also consider watching the on-demand video “Asthma- COPD Overlap; does it exist?” by Professor Dave Singh on the physiological background of Asthma and COPD.
